But those are still fairly general ideas.
If you're going to develop a piece of software,
you need to be clear about *exactly* what you're trying to do.
Take the first point - monitoring the network.
What specific information are you wanting to monitor?
And note that I said "specific" - something vague like
"what's happening on the network" isn't good enough.
You need to think in terms of
"the volume of data sent/received by this particular port
of this particular box, sampled once every 5 minutes"
or
"the number of web page requests rejected by that web
server every hour"
You also need to think about how you might want to display this
information. Store it in a database? Draw graphs? Trigger
an alert if it goes outside expected levels?
You also need to see what tools are already available, and how
your application would differ. For example, I would hope that
you've already looked at software such as MRTG, Cricket or RRDTool.
How closely would these match your requirements?
What in particular do you need that these tools don't already
support?
Might it not be easier to build something on top of these,
rather than write something new?
The same questions would need to be addressed to your other three
requirements. These are also much too general to be of much use.
You need to decide exactly what you want to analyse, exactly what
configuration information you want to construct, and exactly what
you mean by "managing" the whole network.
Until you've got a proper design in mind, it's *much* *much* too
early to start thinking about implementation questions.
