My immediate reaction is that it's perhaps a bit late to start making
such changes now.  We're currently in pre-release mode for 5.3, so
should be concentrating on fixing (manageable) bugs, rather than making
significant changes.

Now I know that I've a much more conservative attitude towards this
than everyone else, so I fully expect to be shot down in flames yet
again.  But I don't believe we should be contemplating such structural
changes at this point - maybe two or three weeks ago, but not now.
