If you just want to monitor bandwidth, why not use a network sniffer such as 
iptraf, which acts passively on the existing connection, and doesn't disrupt 
your network addressing at all ?

If you want some fancy graphics, I'm sure it can't be too hard to get a 
package like mrtg to take its data from a promiscuous mode sniffer instead of 
a normal interface...
