Just now upgraded to 2.1 and sent my friend a message to upgrade at his end.

I have a similar network --running Sygate and use MSN Messenger and
NetMeeting on the Sygate machine with no problem -the multihomed problem may
be hitting you -- I would suggest that you upgrade to Messenger V2.1 before
you do anything else.
