Hi Freeman,
You mean even a user mode *GE* nic driver? I don't think we can assume a
user doesn't care about network driver performance, especially for a GE
driver. Also you mentioned there is a long list for unsupported NIC
devices, I'm wondering the market share of those devices and how much
effort do you think we need to put on to cover them all.
Actually, your intention of improving Solaris nic hardware coverage is
good, but I don't think it's a good idea to just rely on our internal
effort. We need to get community developers and vendors involved to
improve Solaris NIC driver coverage as much as possible.
Could you explain your design idea in more detail so that others can
understand it better?
Thanks,
Kerry

Hi, Roamer,
I think longriver is a good way to improve solaris nic hardware coverage.
However, there are still quite a few hardware not supported by neither
native driver nor 3rd part driver. Here are several examples,
J2585B HP 10/100VG PCI LAN Adapter
88E8001 Gigabit Ethernet Controller
SK-9872 Gigabit Ethernet Server Adapter (SK-NET GE-ZX dual link)
88E8055 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller
3C990B-TX-M/3C990BSVR [Typhoon2]
Actually, the list is quite long. Therefore, new driver still need to be
written
as well as integrated the existing 3rd driver into solaris. That is the
part
I would like to try umd.
BTW, how is your foosball skill going, as powerful ?
Thank you

The issue it try to solve it the lack of solaris driver.
Lack of driver support has long been a disadvantage of solaris, and
nic driver is very critical.
In fact, there are more than 50 available NIC drivers for Solaris and
most NICs have been supported. The issue with NIC drivers is *not*
about anything else, but how to integrate those 3rd party drivers into
Solaris. Indeed, LongRiver project is there and the goal is to list
all NIC/WiFi drivers and integrate them into Solaris. Network Driver
Team (NIC and WiFi) is driving the project and you may get more
information from them directly.
You're suggested to get more information from Device Driver Community
web page.
I would like to create a way to increase nic hardware coverage and
therefore improve the adoption of solaris.
As explained, the way to increase NIC driver coverage is straightly to
integrate those available drivers, but not to duplicate efforts.
Running in use mode will affect the performance. However,
user mode driver focuses on function instead of extreme performance.
Its main purpose is to enable developers and users to access network.
Technically, you may talk to WiFi team to know about the progress of
porting NDIS wrapper to Solaris. I don't think we need to do anything
new by the same way we've done.
Thanks,
Roamer
