Hi Freeman,
How does UMD allow you to "leverage linux nic driver source codes
without any legal issues"?
It is very possible to cause license issue if I ready some linux
driver code and then
write a solaris kernel driver. But if I implement the solaris driver
in user mode,
it will not compromise solaris kernel.
More details. It is very possible that the user mode part will follow
GPL,
for it may be copied from GPL'ed code, but according to the clause of
GPL,
this does not require the kernel part to follow gpl.
I knew there was a GNU/Solaris project....
But this time you are talking about porting Linux drivers to Solaris
user mode. If you want to do this work, you have to read Linux driver
code, that could bring legal issues.
Anyway, all of Linux driver code and kernel code was managed in one
workspace. Kernel code is monolithic, how can you let people in the
world believe you just look into driver specific code, and will not look
other Linux kernel's code.
