Joel,
I have seen at least two causes of this behavior. Mandrake 6 is based on RH6
which uses Xconfigurator, a RedHat X setup program.
1. Xconfigurator doesn't have your video chipset in its database. It displays
the video card/chip list and asks to the user to choose. If the wrong
card/chipset is chosen then Xconfigurator will give you the 'something's wrong'
error message when it tries to test your choices.
2. The video card/chipset is correct but the user chooses a monitor with timing
characteristics quite different from the actual monitor.
You can try the following:
1. From the Mandrake installation CD install
XFree86-XF86Setup-3.3.3.1-58mdk.i586.rpm
2. Run XF86Setup. If you know the Vertical & Horizontal frequency ranges of
your monitor you can set them on the monitor page. BEWARE! incorrect settings
can damage a monitor.
good luck
