This is quite possible. I have a Dell Optiplex G150 (small, quiet, case 
barely bigger than ATX motherboard) in which the CD drive behaves 
perfectly when the case is lying on its base yet plays up when the case 
is lying on its side ...

(For flakiness the Optiplex is hard to beat; the 'pizza box' lid flips 
up and reveals CD, FDD and HD pushed into a moulding on the bottom of 
the lid, connected very shakily to the motherboard ... !)
