I think your sound chip is VIA Technologies | VT82C686 and not VT 8233. I would expect your /etc/modules.conf to look more like, alias char-major-116 snd alias snd-card-0 snd-card-via82C686 I have no experience with this chip, cannot say for sure if supported,but it might well be.
