I think user problem can be solved by running configuration/KDE/System/login manager as root and selecting user tab. In this tab copy users from remaining users to selected user only users that are going to login. Then in show users select radio button selected users. This works for me. Even I have png files of users in folder /opt/kde3/share/apps/kdm/pics/users. This shows users picture.
