The tech department of the electronics shop where I bought my PC said the
same about viruses.

As for the internet: I always connect as normal user, using a USB ADSL
modem, and the connection script calls binary pppd. A configuration file
makes that another binary, named pppoa3, is run. Both pppd and pppoa3 have
been allowed by root (myself in fact) to be used by group "modem", to which
the normal user belongs. 
Is there any danger in doing so?
