I use fluxbox on my 233Mhz laptop (pictures on my website), but try them all.
There are 11 Window Managers available for Mandrake!

When running on a low end machine fast applications are equally important.

For a browser *nothing* IMO beats Opera for speed on a low end machine (except
the text based browsers)
The new 'technology preview' Opera7 is even faster than the current Opera6,
but since it has bugs and some missing functionality you might prefer Opera6
Go here for Opera 7
http://snapshot.opera.com/unix/intel-linux/365-20030307-7.0.0-P2/
select the opera-7.0.0-20030311.4-shared-qt.i386.rpm version for Mdk 9.x

For a file manager try rox or xwc (both in contrib)
rox is very pretty with very fast thumbnails of graphics images.
xwc is very like Windows explorer.

For a mail agent try syplheed or sylpheed-claws (both in contrib)
Opera7 also has its own mail agent which is very sexy.

In general avoid KDE applications (they usually start with 'k'), generally
gtk applications will be faster (they usually start with 'g')
