That's really really weird...
Try this:

* If /mnt/dvd doesn't exist, create it
* If /dev/dvd doesn't exist, make a link to that from whatever your
DVD/CDROM is to it.
(Example as from mine: ln -s /dev/cdrom /dev/dvd)

* Mount the DVD (mount /dev/dvd /mnt/dvd)
* Now try playing and tell us what you see...
