FWIW, I have a SOYO SU-CF card reader, USB, and it's working well since I added 'noapic' (whatever that means/does) to my append= line in lilo.conf.
All I need to do is 'mount /mnt/removable/' and there are the pics.

APIC is used to power down your comp IIRC and put it into standby/sleep/dieyouPOScomp mode.
