wow, and i was told that win98 just wouldn't use more than 512mb of ram.  
that's why i was shocked when i added a 512 stick to the mobo and it actually 
ran for a few days before it started giving me problems.

i'm going to try that out and see if i can fix the problem w/out having to 
remove the ram.  see below.....

not ready to get rid of windows yet.  i'm just starting with linux and my wife 
has a hard enough time with windows, let alone moving her to linux and 
confusing her even more.  maybe after i take basiclinux i'll be more 
comfortable scrapping windows 100%, but we'll see.  i'm in no way a 
programmer nor do i have any knowledge of programming, so windows is my 
"backup" if i make a mistake in linux that i can't fix.  Thanks for the link!
