If you know what the "bus" speed is, you can actually force/pass params
to the kernel to force ATA100/ATA133/ATA66 speeds and transfer rates; as
well, you can use "hdparm" to force some drive settings that may help
inccrease your overall performance...

Yeah - file system - are you using the standard ext3 or ReiserFS? (Or
something else for that matter)...ReiserFS is great - wonderful
performance and the likes...

BTW, if you want to try a nice hdparm string, try this one:

(best to do this from the console before getting into XWindows)

hdparm -d1 -X69 -c3 -m16 -u1 -A1 -W1 /dev/hda
