If you know what the "bus" speed is, you can actually force/pass params to the kernel to force ATA100/ATA133/ATA66 speeds and transfer rates; as well, you can use "hdparm" to force some drive settings that may help inccrease your overall performance... > I have turned off various services (using MCC) and it seemed to help, but > not one in specific service was obvious. Yeah - file system - are you using the standard ext3 or ReiserFS? (Or something else for that matter)...ReiserFS is great - wonderful performance and the likes... BTW, if you want to try a nice hdparm string, try this one: (best to do this from the console before getting into XWindows) hdparm -d1 -X69 -c3 -m16 -u1 -A1 -W1 /dev/hda See wha happuns! stephen kuhn ============================== illawarra computer services a kuhn media australia company http://kma.0catch.com ----------------------------------------------------------------- * This message was composed on a 100% Microsoft free computer * ----------------------------------------------------------------- You may be right, I may be crazy, But it just may be a lunatic you're looking for! -- Billy Joel
