Find it yet? Or, I could have a look myself if you could tell me what the thread was called?

yup, found it, but now I remember Tom was advising it's better to just
do a format and restore from backup.

I'm not too sure about that, since you would be restoring a system
partition, and as Tom said, it also depends on the type of File System
you are using (probably the default...Ext3?).

No idea! Where do I look to find out?

Anyway, his words quoted from the orig post:

" parted, fips, some commercial ones
http://www.google.com/search?q=ext3%20shrink%20partition&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

Returned quite a few hits. As I alluded to before tho, I'd delete existing partitions and re-create 'em. Specially since you can replace from backup."

That's an interesting question, tho, could you restore / from a backup?
and what would you backup to, when the space used obviously would not
fit on yer usual removable media type dealies.

Sounds waaay too complicated for a newbie like me! Maybe I'll just carry on as I am until I run out of space, then buy a bigger computer....

Or, is it possible to move files that I don't use very much from one partition to the other, just for storage? Archives of letters to bank manager etc., just leaving the most recent in the usual space?
