Framebuffer is just high-res text mode, I don't think there's anything
to do with security involved. Most graphics cards will allow you to run
in text mode at a higher res than you would normally see (like when you
first boot your system, those huge, blocky text messages). For example,
in my /etc/lilo.conf, I have:

vga=794

which, IIRC, means that my text mode is 1024x768, with smaller, higher
res text, which is nice on a large monitor.

In Non-FB, you would have the normal vga display, where you get maybe 15
lines on your screen at a time.

Maybe you could think of it as half way between text-mode and X.
