Please don't hijack threads :(.

Do you have a mixer? First use kmix, xmix, aumix, etc., to set the input
levels of the various sliders. In kmix, they're under the Input tab,
look for a microphone or line in. Make sure of course that the cables
are plugged in to the right places on the sound card.

If you've installed 'sox' then you should have a 'rec' and a 'play'.
These are probably the easiest ones to use for simple recording of sound
files through the sound card. If you 'rec 44100 somefile.wav' on the
command line you end up with a sample file of (hopefully) sound. Since
it's a command line tool you can just reinvoke it as needed while you
adjust settings. What I'd try is plugging a male stereo 1/8" jack (one
has both male endings) and have one in the out jack of a walkman or
similar, and another in the line in jack on the sound card, tune to a
radio station & try a couple of test recordings.

Once you've established that you are actually getting a signal you can
try other more sophisticated audio creation or editing tools. If you
want to do editing, I recommend highly "audacity".

Audacity should be able to record live & show you the signals in real
time. At least it used to, but I haven't tried it for that in a while.
