If youi haven't already tried it, boot from CD1. When you get to the screen where you can select install or upgrade, don't choose either. I can't remember whether it's Esc or F1, but one of them will take you to a text screen where you can select rescue. There's an option there that will restore your lilo.
Anne, the CD restore will only work on the first Linux partition it encounters. If it is another he wants, he is out of luck unless he is willing to delete the contents of the first. No, hiding it will not work - Linux ignores the partition hidden flag. Another thoughtless oversight by Mandrake.
