God I hate Compaq! Laptops, desktops, whatever.

I'll be totally out of my depth here in a minute. I've only installed recent 
Mandrake releases (9.1, 9.2, cooker) on Toshiba and IBM laptops. What model 
is yours? Also, have you read this:

I'm not liking the chance of being able to do anything from the Windows side. 
Do you remember when Compaq was supposedly an acronym for 
"COMP(atibility)A(nd)Q(uality)?" It seems now that it's a synonym for cheaply 
made proprietary crap. 

The BIOS (or a large part of it) lives on that second "hidden" partition with 
all of the "Restore" stuff.

I don't know what you need to do next, and I'm sorry I'm unable to help. Maybe 
somebody with a clue will read this and give you a hand. That's why I added 
to the subject line.
