Nevertheless, your input is appreciated. I've got to put the install aside and get to work here, but will check back again this evening. FWIW, it's a Compaq 2175us, WinXP Pro, 40GB drive (NTFS), 512MB, yadda, yadda, yadda. Charlie> I'm not liking the chance of being able to do anything from the Windows side. Well, just for kicks I downloaded a demo copy of Partition Magic (it won't actually /do/ the repartitioning, but walks through the steps leading up to the actual partition in the demo version. It didn't seem to balk at it at all in its demo mode. Charlie> The BIOS (or a large part of it) lives on that second "hidden" partition with all of the "Restore" stuff. I'm /assuming/ that may have been what was contained in the "Extended Partition" that the demo walk-through automatically set up between the proposed 1st (XP) partition and the theoretical Linux partition I wanted to set up. That's why I added Charlie> to the subject line. I'm sure it's doable ... I'm just not sure my knowledge is up to the task, either in Linux or XP ... I've been more of a Win98se guy for umpteen years (well, okay, 4-5) now, so I'm very hesitant to muck with things. Hopefully, someone (with infinite patience) can assist me in a walkthrough of whatever's necessary. Thx again. -- Chuck Mattsen ... [EMAIL PROTECTED] ...
