It was also used to help put one to sleep during intense pain, and was chewed as an mild anaesthetic. Mandrake had a long reputation for being able to expell demons and act as an excorcist. Demons reportedly can not tolerate it's aroma. In both Eastern and Jewish writings there are references to Mandrake as a remover of sterility.
