One reason that you are pointed to how-tos is that printed manuals are 
expensive to make and quickly go out of date.  From your point of view I 
would think the Club membership would be a better buy, as you get all the 
same documentation on-line (which I think anyone can get) and also access to 
the club forums and download areas.  From MandrakeSoft's point of view, they 
get more money out of a download+club membership than they do from selling 
you a boxed set.  IMO it's a win-win.
