Any recommendations (or horror stories) for a dual layer DVD drives? I am looking at the Sony DAU 710A ($90 - $100) and the LiteOn SOHW-1213S. ($80).

The Sony DRU-710A works fine on MDK 10.1 and burns double layer no problem with k3b. Takes about 45 minutes to burn 8.5 Gig.
