The most common cause is video driver problems.  Try running XFDrake to see if 
that helps.

Without the proprietary NVidia drivers you will not get hardware acceleration, 
but looking at the rest of your spec you are probably not wanting to play the 
latest games <g>  so it probably doesn't matter.  Let us know what happens 
when you type XFDrake
