Our own TWiki page http://mandrake.vmlinuz.ca/bin/view/Main/DVDDriVes seems to be pretty-well entirely about writers. The reader drive that I replaced a couple of months ago was 4 years old, so hardly the newest standard, and I had no problems with that either.
