If you get any error messages - save them & tell us.... Mandrake 7.0 is heaps better than 6.1 at setting up Video & Sound, I got a copy from: http://www.copyleft.co.nz (NZ$ 15.00 including fastpost) You'd probably have to reinstall, rather than upgrade though, as 7.0 has a few bugs...... as for your problems with make Xconfig etc, you need the development tools, if you have nothing important you could try booting off your CDROM & choosing Upgrade-->custom-->development tools (this could stuff things though (not hardware)). You could just reinstall & pick them too (I'm on install #7 or so myself...) Warren.
