You need to create an empty partition on your HDD before you attempt to
install linux.  You can use Partition Magic (or something similar) to resize
your windows partition without losing any current data.  I would make an
extended partition (at least 1.5 GB if you want a full install of Linux) and
then try it again.  

I am not sure what the situation was with your previous install, but unless
you installed linux over your windows partition you did not have to
reinstall windows.  I have experienced before that sometimes when Lilo
creates the boot file in the MBR is leaves out the Windows partition.  BTW
during install, near the end it gives you some options about Lilo.  make
sure that all partitions (linux, windows, floppy) are setup at that time.
otherwise you will need to edit the /etc/lilo.conf file after install to add
any boot partitions.
