Did you even run X in /home/glenn, when logged in as ROOT?

Good chance that your .kderc now has root as owner.
Check this by

ls -l ~/.kderc

If it is indeed owned by root, then log in as root again, and do a

chown glenn.glenn /home/glenn/.kderc
