Actually, Hugo, for almost all ISPs, save those with proprietary protocols
(and there aren't many) all dial-up, ISPs use the TCP/IP protocol for
communication. Most use PAP (password authentication protocol) for login,
and some occasional ones (Juno is an example) use CHAP (can't remember that
acronym--help anyone? My mind is fading!).

If you have the correct protocol (TCP/IP over PPP), PAP/CHAP, username,
password, compression level, PPP LCP, DNS, and X.25 settings (etc.),
there's nothing stopping you from configuring your own system settings to
authenticate to ANY dial-up server. Other ISP technologies (DSL, cable,
ISDN) use different protocols (pppoe, ctx, etc.)and may have different
methods of authenticating the user. But, all of these are configurable from
any machine.

Local LAN traffic is different, however... but the local LAN protocols
(NetBEUI, NetBT, IPX/SPX, etc.) do not adhere to the internet standards of
communication (IP - Internet Protocol, and TCP - Transmission Control
Protocol) cannot communicate with internet traffic. These protocols can be
encapsulated with the TCP/IP protocol to talk to machines that use those
standards, but something needs to be stuck between them to wrap/unwrap the
other packets.

The ISP I keep sending people to is 1NOL, and I tell then not to download
the software, simply to configure their ppp connection for DHCP (of course),
enter 209.210.176.8 and 209.210.176.9 for DNS, enter their username +
"@1nol" *without* the dot anything, and add "xms" to their password.
Obviously, you need to write down the telephone numbers when you sign up for
the account, or you ain't going anywhere.

ISP had to have a certain SO or software, that there were issues to connect
to them due to SO constraints (Win**) or something like that.
