[newbie] network

I need help getting linux to connect to the network,  I entered in all the info under linuxconf (i'm running mandrake 7.0).  I have static ip and i entered all the dns info but i still can't connect to the network, or internet. I'm running a dual boot and I copied the info from my win configuration so i'm sure the info was right. I have a real tek 8139 NIC and the harware seems to be configured properly,  I'm new at this so any help would be appreciated.
