Another _hint_ may be price. Winmodems, because they are software driven modems, tend to be quite a bit cheaper. If it's under US$50 it might well be a winmodem. You can check the Mandrake site for a list of modems (and other hardware) that will work with their distro. Also check the Linux Documentation Project.
