The MPlayer developers are convinced to the point of fanaticism that the number
2.96 is somehow evil. Don't worry about it.

You'd be better off getting Mandrake's packages from an FTP mirror (there's a
list of them at linux-mandrake.com).

No need to worry about this.

Ensure that you have Mandrake's gcc3 and egcs packages installed. Then you need
to change compilers before compiling anything.

I'm assuming that you use bash for your shell (if you don't know what bash is,
then you're most likely using it).

To switch to egcs:

        $ export CC=egcs CXX=egcs++

To switch to GCC 3 (only in Mandrake 8.1, not 8.0):

        $ export CC=gcc-3.0.1 CXX=gcc-3.0.1
