FYI, if you use Windows 98, don't bother with more than 512 mb of RAM, 2k will address up to 3 gb.
Linux I don't know, but after about 512mb even in linux I'd bet you won't see a huge performance boost ;p Unless you do intense grafx work with GIMP.
