Looks like the 8233A is not currently supported, I've tried all the suggestions here + tried the new Via 1.14 drivers for Mandrake 8.2 but none of them work.
Looking in the readme for the new driver it says the 8233A is not supported under 8.2 (but 8233 and 8233B are). So I'll guess I'll have to wait or look at the full ALSA driver and see if that works.
