Never could get sound to worky on my Gnome either ... as for crackling I
fixed that :)  With an eraser.

yank soundcard, take white eraser (for preference anyway, use pink if
necessary) GENTLY wipe it across the contacts on the card.  Blow off
remaining dust, if theres a fan, blow it out gently to get rid of dust,
and make sure theres no dust in the slot or on the contacts. Reseat
card, should be fine.
