But we are going to need a bit more information about the hardware you are using... It sounds like you are using a laptop. If this is the case, the next question if what type of mouse are you using? (PS/2, USB, serial?) One problem I have run into is that most laptops will disable the built-in touchpad when you plug in a PS/2 mouse. Some laptops have a BIOS setting to change this, some have a Windows program to do the same thing and some have both. If this is the case, you will need to configure the laptop to use both. (This can sometimes be a problem, it the touchpad and mouse are not using the same protocal...)
Now, if you are using a USB or serial mouse, the system will normaly configure itself automaticly to use both the mouse and the touchpad. The built-in touchpad is usualy seen as a PS/2 mouse. Now, if you are using the mouse with the CLI, it is a bit more work, but it can be done. I can describe how to set gpm up to use 2 mice if you need it, as well as setting up X to use gpm as its mouse.
