I think I've solved it.  Following your hint, I checked the bios 
settings, and there was one for power-up display.  It was set to Auto, 
and apparently Auto meant that it would display the one that it found 
first.  The optional setting was for Both.  I have changed it, and I 
think all is now well.

Fn F5 still doesn't work, but that is of no great consequence.  Thanks 
for the help
