Then why are you trying to run 1024x768 with 32 bit? During installation you don't get the final resolution unless you use the test option. If your problem is that you get the wrong resolution automatically then go into your XF86Config (resp. XF86Config-4 if that's what your distro uses) and then go to the screen section, there you will find one or several display subsection and possibly a default resolution. I would remove the 1024x768 from the mode line for the 32 (24?) resolution and if you don't have one I would create a display subsection for 16bit with 1024x768 in order to have the choice between 800x600 at 24 and 1024x768 at 16 If you don't know how to do it scream and I will post an example...
