You may get the same result without going back to 6.2 by forcing the install program
to select X
3.3.6 (I believe there is a preferx3 or something like that in the conf parms) This is
what I did
for an antique laptop with RH 7.2, it runs nice and accelerated with X 3.3.6 and
hideously slow
with 4.1 and vesa...
You could have a look in /usr/X11R6/bin to see whether there are a few XF86_whatever
(these being
the 3.3.6 servers) if there is one you recognise as you old friend (often XF86_SVGA
possibly
XF86_S3) Then it suffices to change /etc/X11/X from a symlink to
/usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 (the X
4.x.x server) to /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_whatever and to ask Xconfigurator to generate the
apropriate
XF86Config
