Dave and Listmates,
Thanks for your response. This hasn't helped... Here's more info...
At the suggestion of someone on this list who emailed me off the list, I went
back to the FAQ on the website and followed the instructions for
creating a shortcut to ebase if using FMP. Per the instructions in the FAQ,
I "removed" the ebase version that was mapped as ebase.exe (the runtime
version) and then right clicked and dragged the ebase.102 file to my desktop.

The icon wouldn't "DO" anything. Since you indicated that it SHOULD be
ebase_.102, (not ebase.102) I deleted that shortcut. However, I still cannot find the
ebase_.102 file (with the underscore.) That is even though I launched FMP 5.0 and went
to File>Open. There, it only gives me folders and a few other files. (even though I
selected "All Files (*.*)" under "Files of type" in the dialog box. What I get is
this:
Folders: Examples, Fmi, Labels, System, Templates, Themes, Tutorial, Web, Web Security
Files: Fmpro50.cnt, Fmpro50.fts, Fmpro50 (with a ? mark - is this a help
file?), and Readme.

Next suggestions???
Finally, BTW, the FAQ on the website doesn't mention ebase_.102 (with the underscore.)
Thus, it is very confusing to use that info.

Thanks for your help.

Here's what I think is happening. You are double-clicking on the
ebase.102 icon to launch ebase. This is the runtime version of
FileMaker that came with the file set. All your ebase files, however,
are now in FileMaker version 5 format, since you converted them when
you installed FileMaker. So you get the message that you are starting
FileMaker 4 (the runtime version) but the files are in version 5. Try
launching FileMaker, selecting the File>Open menu item, and
navigating to the ebase_.102 file (not ebase.102, which is the
runtime).

>Please note that we do NOT have FMP 4.0 nor have we ever had 4.0 installed.

Actually, you did, in the form of a runtime application delivered
with the ebase files.
