This is really true. The OpenStreetMap community elects to take a
"high road" when it comes to deriving data from other maps. It is far
better to leave data out of OSM, than to take data from an encumbered
source without permission. When there is a question, we omit the
source.
To me it’s just as much of a question as the ‘question’ of “The sign
design is copyrighted, therefore we can’t use that information” which is
obviously ludicrous.
