Thanks. A more-knowledgeable-than-I work friend recommended it. I was using RedHat, but wasn't learning much. So, something stable and more readily customized seems to be the way; hence, Debian.

apt-get install xserver-common
apt-get install xserver-xfree86

Hope that helps

Ok, did that. It seems to have helped... or, at least, the error message is different. Now, when I type startx, there is a blank screen, a second's pause and then text describing the video card, colors, etc, with the final message:

Fatal server error:
no screens found.

It says that there should be a log at /var/log/XFree86.0.log, but I cannot find such a log. Any ideas? It seems that it's closer to working, but still no luck. Thanks--

Andrew

Congrats! you're gonna love debian. remember that the only user who has permission to 'startx' is root. So you may need a login manager like xdm, gdm, kdm, wdm. (I prefer gdm).
