Did you configure X at all?  I think you can run "dpkg --reconfigure
xserver-xfree86"  Or install an X configurator.

it's actually 'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86'

try that out. (by the way you're going to need to know what kind of 
graphics card you have.
