oK these are all good suggestions but what you are going to want to do is install webmin (http://webmin.com). This tool is great for everything linux. it will help you configure cron, apache, samba, email servers. At some point you will end up learning how to do all this by hand, but it's nice to start with a webbased interface to "get things working"
in addition to what's been said: I have always had a problem with remembering to add users to samba.
