I like your idea... I had never heard of Webmin before. I'll check it out. I want to learn the do-it-by-hand approach, but an easier method is good, too... much as when I let my students use the calculator after they don't need it. :-) Thanks for the tips, everyone. I definitely have a good starting point now.

in addition to what's been said: I have always had a problem with
remembering to add users to samba. So in order to do this you can
convert unix users to samba in webmin, or do it manually:

smbpasswd -a <username>
