For what it's worth, I started out on slackware and loved every minute of it. It was great to learn how everything worked from scratch. I've since moved on to gentoo, where I can ignore many of the details and get things done.
I also know people who started out from the opposite side. I suppose it depends on how much time you have to invest, as was mentioned by this: "which I didn't have time to conquer. "


Basically, Kirsa, it depends on how much time you have to invest now. If you don't have much, start with Mandrake or Fedora. If you've got more, start with Debian or Gentoo. After learning for a while, you'll probably want to switch distributions and try something else. Let us know what you decide though.

Also, I'd like to address a second question that nobody else has addressed yet, specifically the availability of install media. Basically, you can download and burn CD images for the cost of bandwidth and CD-R media. If you don't want to do that, you can usually purchase a CD for a very reasonable amount of money. Usually just barely over media and shipping.
