I think I'm going to try out Mandrake for awhile (I'll be sure to not get 9.0).  I have a Knoppix CD which appears to detect all my hardware fabulously well (though I haven't tried out my speakers with it yet).  I would've installed Knoppix on my system, but was unable to figure out with my extreme n00b Linux skills how to get it off the CD onto my hard drive.  Mandrake sounds interesting at any rate.

My biggest problem with Debian was, in fact, getting my hardware set up on it.  I don't know any coding at all (besides HTML and _javascript_ which I don't think quite count), and mainly bugged various friends over IRC almost endlessly to have them help me configure everything so that it would work.  I never did get my old sound card working (I have a new, though equally cheap one now).  I really don't have much time at all to spend learning Linux right now, as I'm trying to graduate in August in addition to about a million other things going on right now.  So, I figure an easy introduction will be good, after which I can delve deeper into stuff as my time allows.

I unfortunately only have a standard CD-Rom drive (which is dying slowly), and therefore can't burn myself the CD images.  But, luckily, one of my friends offered to burn it for me, so life is good.

Anyways, I'll probably be contributing to this lovely little list a lot more as I try to get things figured out.  Thanks for all the suggestions!
