Yeah, you gotta have sound. I could never fully migrate to linux until I got mine working. But then it was all rough sailing from there. Mandrake uses Alsa by default (which I like, but a lot of others don't), so the first question is whether there's alsa support for your card (chipset). You can find that out at http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/ You can use straight oss if must be, though in my experience it rarely has any better support for soundcards, and it's not near as cool.
